Regarding the independent campus, what is the independent campus ?

The independent campus is basically a new concept that allows students to gain freedom of learning in higher education. This concept is basically a continuation of a previous concept, namely independent learning.

4 Free Campus Policies of Nadiem Makarim

1. Transforming a PTN satker into a PTN BH

In the Ministry of Education and Culture’s policy in relation to the implementation of an independent campus is to change PTN satker to become PTN BH. PTN satker is a state university with the status of a work unit in which there are public services available. The change was made by converting PTN satker into PTN BH (public universities with the power of legal entities).

The changes made to the implementation of the independent campus are due to the current demands that have moved very quickly. PTN BH will certainly be owned by all campuses in order to compete on the world stage of course.

Basically, all state universities with legal entity status will get the flexibility to partner with industry. This is also related to the flexibility of the campus to carry out commercial projects later. The existence of PTN BH will also be able to make changes to financial arrangements quickly according to what is most needed.

2. Simplification of university acreditation

One of the other policies implemented in the independent campus is the simplification of university accreditation. This policy relates to the re-accreditation program which is basically automatic for all ranks and is also voluntary for universities. Basically, in the implementation of an independent campus, in the future accreditation remains valid for five years and can be renewed automatically. The A accreditation will be given to every university that can later succeed in getting international accreditation.

3. Opening new study programs

Furthermore, in the implementation of an independent campus, Nadiem Makarim sets another policy that will be determined for each university, be it PTN or PTS. This policy is related to the autonomy for each university, both PTN and PTS, to open or establish a new study program.

The autonomy to establish new study programs will be given if a PTN or PTS already has accreditation A or B. Nadiem continued that the autonomous rights are given if they have collaborated with organizations or universities that are included in the QS top 100 world universities. In determining this policy, there are exceptions to the education program and also the health sector.

The cooperation includes curriculum preparation, field work practices or internships, and also job placement for students. In opening or establishing a new study program, Kemdikbud will collaborate with universities and study program partners in supervising. Tracer study is basically an obligation that is carried out annually and higher education institutions are required to ensure the determination of this matter.

4. Two semesters of off-campus activity

Nadiem said that basically whatever is learned is often just a starting point that is owned. The existence of a policy to carry out activities for two semesters outside the campus is basically a form of independence obtained by students.

Activities outside the campus can be done with a variety of things ranging from internships or practices in an organization. Teaching at a school in a remote area is basically also an example of the application of two-semester activities outside the campus. Students can also carry out activities to help research or research lecturers and help S2 and S3 students conduct research.

The existence of an independent campus policy that gives students the freedom to carry out activities outside the classroom will encourage them to be independent. Campuses that give students the freedom to do activities outside the classroom will help them know more about the application of their knowledge in a field of work. This will help students to then be better prepared to face the world of work which is currently increasingly difficult.
